Why do CCW Breakaways’ Pant Inseams Seem to be Longer? Why do some CCW Styles have Pleats?

Why do CCW Breakaways’ Pant Inseams Seem to be Longer? Why do some CCW Styles have Pleats?

Occasionally, one of our CCW Breakaways customers will ask these questions. The answer is simple . . . but to understand the “why,” a simple equation lays the foundation.

The Total Pant’s Length (the Outseam) = The Inseam + A Dimension from the Crotch to the Waistband

Our crotch depth is deeper than most pants' makers. "Why” did we intentionally design our pants this way? First, for comfort and functionality. Second, for pant-life longevity and practicality.

Comfort and Functionality:

  • CCW Breakaways men’s pant design is different by intent. Our front rise and rear rise are longer. This benefits the wearer in two ways. When a man sits down, his butt cheeks spread. The “make-up-material” must come from somewhere. Otherwise, it gets tight in the crotch and that is not good for men . . . especially men with a gun in pocket carry mode.
  • In years gone by, clothing designers aimed for functionality rather than fashion. Today, men’s pants today are advertised and modeled in a standing position . . . but most modern American men spend more time sitting than standing. We’re up and down from desks and chairs. We’re in and out of vehicles all day long. More roominess is needed down there.
  • Tight pants restrict the mobility of and range of motion of men’s hips and legs. And since, most violent street encounters “go to the ground,” martial arts mobility is essential for survival. A longer front and rear rise solves this problem, but it also slightly increases the outseam length.
  • Pleats are added to some of our Khaki and Cargo styles for functional, not fashion based reasons. Pleats allow for width-wise expansion and greater ground-fighting mobility as adopted by most martial arts clothing. The width-wise expansion feature was more important when men straddled a horse or a motorcycle on a daily basis. To learn more about pleat history, read this webpage:

Practicality:

  • All CCW Breakaways’ pants go through a wash-shrink-dry-press cycle before they are shipped. This extra step in manufacturing costs more but it is essential for gun-toting comfort and for pants’ long-term dimensional stability. We do not want our clothing to shrink over time.
  • Our products are 100% cotton for all-day-long comfort and breathability. Natural length-wise fibers shrink more than width-wise fibers. Synthetics do not have this problem and for the wearer, synthetic clothes do not feel as good as all-natural fibers. Americans love cotton! So, with this practical reality in mind, our manufacturer errs on the upside of the tolerance scale, not the downside. In manufacturing, nothing can be made spot-on-target, so up-side tolerances do occur. These webpages elaborate more details:
